How much do you know about ratios?

This week in maths room 7 have been learning about ratios. A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing. This is my score and it reflects my understanding of ratios. 100%

Messed up shapes

In room7 we are learning and doing some of our  maths on a site called 'How active  is your brain?'. The aim of the game is to try to spot the odd one out as quick as you can. The first game that we practiced on was a maths game, and now we are moving onto a shapes game, and this is my personal best yet.

The pursuit of his dream

‘He shoots, he scores and the Detroit Pistons win the finals’. That is what the young motivated basketball player named Michael Jordan always dreamed of. He was 15 years old and living on the streets of Detroit. He was about ten feet tall and had black skin with black hair. Everyday he would train day and night in a court at night practicing, hoping that one day he will be chosen for the Detroit Pistons basketball team. He was the best of the best but was not yet seen by other people.

At the age of 18, Michael Jordan took a job at a panel and paint shop, however he still had the fire in him and motivation for basketball. He took this job to save up for a expensive but exotic pair of Shaquille O’neal snickers. While he was practising on the court next to his workshop, a group of men came to the front of his workshop and stood there. After a while Michael Jordan noticed them and walked over to them and they started throwing fireworks and rocks at his shop and then they ran away. When he saw this he tried to catch them, but they jumped in a car that was waiting for them, and they drove away and left Michael’s workshop sizzling in flames.

The next day Michael arrived at his workshop with the feeling that all was lost. With all hopes lost Michael Jordan sadly sits down in front of the ashes of his workshop and sobbed in sorrow thinking about what he is going to be in the future. Suddenly a mini truck drives past and throws two sacks of money at him beeping the horn down the road. In fury Michael Jordan opened one of the sacks, and sees the money he quickly opens the second and also the same. With the happiest thoughts going around in his head, he thinks about the Shaquille O’neal snickers that he wanted and goes home in delight.

The next day he heads to the shop with his most wanted exotic Shaquille O’neal snickers, and enters the shop called ‘Foot locker’ and sees the pair of Shaquille O’neal snickers locked in the three centimetre glass box. He walks up to the counter and asked the shopkeeper for the Shaquille O’neal snickers. When Michael Jordan received the shiny pair of Shaquille O’neal snickers he started to practise again hoping to finally make it in now that he has the Shaquille O’neal snickers. With the money left over he used it to build another workshop and purchased tools for the workshop. Within a week his workshop was rebuilt and paid for a court for him to practise in. After cleaning up his new workshop he decided to practice before he packs up and leaves. When he was practising the former coach of the Detroit Pistons was passed by, when he saw Michael Jordan do a 360 windmill and stops and calls Michael Jordan to come, and talks to him and then the coach said that he wanted Michael Jordan to enter his team as the center , then before the coach leaves,  Michael Jordan hugs him and shakes his hand and says ‘I will not let you down. 15 years passed Michael Jordan is named in the world of basketball ' The great one '.

21st century mess

Should students still use netbooks or use books and pencils?

In the world today people are turning normal things into digital products. Netbooks  are now mostly used by students in many schools. If people start to use digital items/products in the future companies will start to depend on digital products and jobs will start to drop in large amounts and this is why I strongly believe that we should continue to use pen and paper and these are my reasons.

Firstly, we should use pen and paper and encourage other people to use pen and paper as well, is because if we start using digital items and products like netbooks, these products in the future would cost quantities of money to buy, and now that schools are starting to use netbooks, in the future principals will have to buy multiple digital items for the whole school, and because these products are expensive there will be no money left to afford sports gear and school trips & camps.

Secondly, we should use pen and paper because recently there have been reports that students in university can’t write in their mother tongue. Using netbooks would make school students and even high school students  not spell anymore and it will be impossible to spell simple words like the days of the week. During 2010 when the netbooks had been brought to schools, the percentages of students failing in tests had dropped a large amount from 98% to almost less than 50% because of the majority use of netbooks.

Lastly, we shouldn’t use netbooks because instead of using it to learn, most students play games and look at things they are not supposed to be looking at. Netbooks is another way to encourage kids, like students to not listen to their teachers and not learn. Children will get addicted to netbooks and want to start to use netbooks instead of pen and paper. These digital items/products that are supposed to be learning tools for school students are being taken advantage of, by school children for inappropriate sites.

In this world of the 21st century, people especially schools are turning to the new world of wifi and internet, but in the olden days people used to just use pen and paper. Parents and also school teachers should think carefully about purchasing these new but unhelpful products for their kids or students or else they would be affected the most.

We meet again

On Saturday I played a game against Tevita’s team again at Aorere park and this time they had a new girl player. When my team got to the park we waited for the rest of the team to arrive so that we could do our training. We waited until they arrived and by the time they got to the park it was 11 O’clock. We started doing our warm ups straight-away and when we were halfway through our stretches we saw Tevita’s team walking past.

When we saw them we thought we were going to beat them because we recognised their rugby plays from the last game. We thought that we could use it to our advantage but when we saw their coach walking past it was a different coach from the last game, which meant that they could have different game plans.

Soon after we finished our stretches and ball skills, we walked onto the field with Tevita’s team and played rock, paper, scissors to decide who gets to kick the ball. They won and they chose to receive the ball. When my team was walking back to the kicking mark we were angry because we lost the rock, paper, scissors.

After we kicked we chased after the ball, but when one of Tevita’s players caught the ball he ran straight through my whole team and dived for the first try of the game. When they jogged back one of them put the ball on a kicking T and they kicked for the conversion and got it over. When we ran up to kick they kept on scoring until half time, my team was so tired because the first half took fifty minutes.

When we walked off to have a rest my team was so hungry they finished all the water and all of the oranges. When my team finished eating and drinking we sat down to listen to the coach and he said to change our plans because the oppositions were observing our plays, so our coach changed our game plan to lava lava.

After the long talk we ran back on the field and this time my team was happy, because we were receiving the ball. When the opposition kicked the ball, one of my rugby team caught the ball and before he could run he got speared in the chest. We had to pause the game because he was badly injured, we carried him off the field and to the sideline. The game had to continue on with 14 players against 15 players from the opposition. When we carried on they got the ball and kept on scoring until the last minute. We scored one try and my team was very happy because we got a try. That was the end of the game and then we shaked our hands with the opposition. After that, Tevita and I went to buy some lunch at the takeaway nearby.

Interesting training

Yesterday I had my rugby training but before that I had to go to my weighing in at the Avondale racecourse. When I got to the racecourse, I saw many teams in different colours lining up to get weighed inside the large building. After one hour it was my teams turn to enter the building and get weighed on the double scale. Soon after the people  that were weighing me finished and I went outside with my other teammates and left to go back to the club and then we started to warm up for our training while we were waiting for our coach and the rest of the team.

When my team got back from the weighing in at Avondale racecourse, my coach got out all the rugby balls and threw them at us and set up the cones for us to start our training. Afterwards our coach told us to sprint around the whole field twice. When my team sprinted around the field once it started to rain, then a little while after it started to rain even harder so my coach told us to stand under the shelter until the rain calms down then we could start our training. Later the rain calmed down and we finally started our training, we were passing the ball around then we started doing our stretches and soon after all that running we finally played a rugby game . When our game finished we entered the club and worked out our game plan for the game on Saturday.

Stage fright

On Thursday the 20th of September there was a large festival in the hall. The purpose of the festival was to raise money for the junior kids playground and to entertain the people that came to watch. When i arrived to school i thought i came late but i was lucky that they were still there. After i entered room1 they told me to put on my lava lava and go check if anyone else was coming. Next i went to check The little kids in the Samoan group and they were running around and playing with the other groups, After  i saw them i called them to come in and change. Later we all changed and got ready and went up to the hall. Soon we came to the hall and the hall was full of people and was very noisy. When we came into the hall people had large cameras and filming cameras and were going around taking pictures of people. After awhile the Maori group entered the stage and Mrs Bullot Said a introduction speech and told us to stand for the national anthem. After the national anthem we turned around and sang the pacific greeting song. Finally we turned back around after the audience clapped and sat down for the Maori group. During the Maori group the crowd were clapping and cheering when the Maori group done their haka soon the Maori group finished we clapped for them then they exited the stage. After the break the Samoan group came on the stage and got ready while everyone were sitting down. While we were dancing our relatives came on the stage and stuck lots of money on us. After we danced Miss Craig started to dance with Dehnyse and Agnes soon an old lady came on the stage and started dancing with Miss Craig and put money on her. After our dance everyone was clapping and shouting. Soon i had to return the costume to Miss Craig and went home. It was my first performance standing in front as a leader with Benjamin, it was my funnest cultural fest ever!.
